Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so lucky to spend my days with remarkable fifth graders! My class is filled to the brim with kind, creative, thoughtful, inquisitive learners who are ready to take on any challenge. As an online public school educator, I have the privilege of working with children from an array of communities, cultural backgrounds, and educational experiences. My students come from rural, urban, and suburban communities, as well as military bases throughout the state of Washington.
My goal is to create a tight-knit classroom community in which every student feels respected, encouraged, and empowered.
When given a safe, positive, engaging environment, children will enjoy school and become life-long learners. I see my role as a facilitator of learning in which each student plays an active part. It is my job to foster inquisitiveness and to impart self-confidence upon every child in my classroom.
My Project
I'm looking forward to providing all of my students with concrete examples of the math concepts we are learning about in fifth grade. Even in a virtual elementary classroom, it is important for students to have access to math manipulatives. I’m excited to share these materials during our online lessons to actively involve young mathematicians in discovery during the learning process!
Engaging manipulatives will serve as visual models as students explore geometry, fractions, place value, decimals, and other essential fifth grade math concepts.
Research shows that the use of math manipulatives like fraction tiles, dice, volume cubes, and place value coins can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge in order to gain a deeper understanding of math concepts. Perhaps even more importantly, using hands-on learning tools will make math time meaningful, engaging, and fun!
