Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the teacher of the intellectually disabled moderate (IDM) program at my middle school. I work at a low-income school, with very few resources, and most of the families I work with are at or below the poverty level. I don't want to let lack of resources stand in the way of my students’ education. I want to be able to provide them with the best learning experience possible and opportunities that will help them progress.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to accomplish my goals when resources are limited and the demand is high.
I have 6th through 8th graders, and all my students are at different ability levels. I have nonverbal students who need different resources from my students who are struggling readers. I created a classroom environment that runs by centers, and centers lack the resources for the students’ levels. I want to create centers that will enrich all of my students’ learning.
Besides teaching intellectually disabled students, I am the Leadership teacher. I am very involved with the school and try to promote a positive, inclusive school culture. Our student population needs motivation and guidance, and I hope I can create that environment through Leadership events and activities.
My Project
One of the things I was proud of accomplishing is taking my students on field trips. Due to the aftermath of the pandemic, field trips are going to be a little harder to come by, but with a virtual reality headset, I can take students to endless places. My students need an Oculus Quest VR headset for virtual learning and exploration experiences in art, health, history, language arts, and science classes. These devices provide an all-in-one VR experience; the devices only need wireless internet and apps to function.
With the Oculus Quest VR Headset, my students could tour the International Space Station and visit the moon when learning astronomy.
When studying anatomy students can take a virtual tour of the human body. When studying oceanography students can explore the Great Barrier Reef. Our art students can paint in 3D, using the Tilt Brush application or tour Athens. The possibilities seem endless. The great thing about this is the language my students will acquire from the things they will see. I also would love to use the fitness apps to encourage students to move their bodies in class. This can also be a great way to teach students alternative ways to stay healthy and active. Since besides this being an educational tool, it can also be an incentive. I’m trying to teach students about earnings. They have class jobs and they can earn tickets for items. This can be used as a ticket item. I also hope to find an app that can work on money and math concepts. This would help with their financial literacy skills. This would be a great addition to my classroom.
