Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are like family. We start every day with a smile and end each day with a hug or high five. We support and encourage each other and build relationships and memories that will shape their personalities and future. Each student in our class is unique; many are bilingual and English is their second language. Our classroom celebrates different ethnicities and cultures daily- we have students from many different countries- Somalia, Mexico, and Vietnam to name a few! Our school is located in a low income/high poverty area. Home life for many of our students can be unstable and difficult at times. Our class also has a high percentage of students with special needs (6/24).
Despite challenges, my 24 amazing third grade students are clever, determined, honest, and hardworking.
They deserve a classroom that feels like home, a place of love and comfort. Many come from difficult situations and 96% get free or reduced-price lunch. I want to create a place where students feel at safe and loved, where they are excited to come each day. They deserve a school that they feel welcomed at and have all the resources they will need to succeed.
My Project
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on communities everywhere, disrupting routines, events, and now, schools.
Schools closed their doors and sent students home to slow the spread of the virus, but opened a window through virtual learning for teachers to continue to work with their students.
Schools across the country are implementing Distance Learning. Starting in April, my students will be expected to participate in virtual learning until the end of the year in late July. I will be working to create quality online lessons. My students and I were not prepared for this when we left our classroom. Many don't have access to the technology needed for distance learning.
An iPad Pro will help me to create custom videos with voice overs and handwritten annotations, which will help bridge our learning from the classroom to home. It will help create lessons specifically tailored to my students' needs. It will help me model my thinking in real time with my students, as well as in video lessons. Editing and revising student work in real time with video chat is going to be an every day occurrence and an iPad Pro will make our limited time significantly more productive. Taking what we would normally do in a notebook and putting it on a digital platform is going to be essential during this time because many of my students do not have access to basic school supplies.
Your donation will even the playing field for low-income students and allow them to further their learning and give them a sense of order and stability. This project would give my students access to the lessons they need in order to help them continue their education, close the gap, and keep them from falling behind.
