I am a sixth grade mathematics and science teacher in Amite, Louisiana. We are a small community in Tangipahoa Parish that has been affected by the most recent hurricane season. At our school, over 90% of the children receive free or reduced lunch. As a science teacher, I am trying to increase student achievement in the area of physical science. I believe that if we were able to have more science labs, the children would greatly benefit from what they are able to learn. To perform labs for our students, the cost would be tremendous. We are unable to pay for the supplies. One alternative to this problem would be to have virtual labs. There are videos and Internet sites that show physical science labs. Unfortunately, I do not have the multimedia equipment to show these videos. I would like to request a projector to use with my computer that will show virtual science labs on-screen. By using multi-sensory approaches to concepts, they have a greater chance of retaining the information. I hope through the use of more innovative and entertaining methods the students will spark and interest in science. It would not only show labs, but could actually be a guide to students performing those labs. This projector would not only be used in science, but would be used over and over across the curriculum and for years to come.
