My students live in a broad, spread-out collection of rural communities, commuter neighborhoods, and an old mining town--all about an hour from the nearest shopping mall or movie theater. At least half of my students receive free and reduced lunches, and many families struggle to meet their basic needs.
Students all learn in different ways, and my goal is to provide a variety of learning experiences and tools for each of them.
Learning should not be stagnant and school does not have to be a chore. Every student has a passion and when we unlock that passion, we can unlock their learning potential. That's what our sixth grade classroom is all about.
My Project
When you think of Social Studies, do you think of a dusty globe? An outdated textbook? A pull-down wall map? When my students come to me, they dread the subject. Dates and names and long tests! Who wants to take that class?
But what if Ms. Frizzle taught Social Studies?
What if the teacher could travel the world with their students and *show* them, rather than just tell them about those sites, cultures, and events? With modern technology, we can!
This past month I was able to do a short virtual reality tour of King Tut's tomb using virtual reality headsets that students brought in, and it sent student engagement through the roof! Students were not just seeing King Tut's tomb, they were interacting with it, exploring it, and absorbing it. If we had a class set of VR Goggles, we could apply it to all of our Social Studies units and to other classroom subjects, as well. I want to bring Social Studies to life, and you can help me!
