Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love hands-on activities and seeing science in action! Whether it is demos or labs, students enjoy learning about science so much more when they are doing the science. There is a difference between learning about the science and actually being a scientist.
We have a large population of low income families, giving us a high rate of students receiving a free or reduced-price lunch.
We also have a large population of EL learners, which makes differentiated learning all the more important. With such a high need from our students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.
I am teaching a new science course, Principles of STEM, and this course is meant to provide students with hands on experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. From programming to engineering, my students are eager to learn and are ready to apply what they know.
My Project
Students will use the Oculus Quest to explore various educational topics with Virtual Reality. The Quest is a standalone VR headset that allows students to move around the room and interact with a virtual environment using the headset and controllers. This headset will primarily be used in my STEM class and Migrant STEM program, but will be accessed by other students in Chemistry and AP Physics as well.
The Oculus Quest will open the door of education in an engaging, dynamic, and surreal manner unlike anything they have experienced before.
Students will be expected to engage in National Geographic Experience, Tilt Brush by Google, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Apollo 11, Nature Trek, and Ocean Rift. Most of these titles will have a direct relevance to STEM education. Tilt Brush borders on STEAM education, in which the arts will be utilized as students create their own original art in virtual space. Keep talking and Nobody Explodes is a team building game built on collaboration and teamwork. These titles, and more, will be accessed by the Quest for education. The Quest will be incorporated into a virtual reality unit that introduces students to the future of education: virtual reality!
