This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from many countries, and 20 of 21 students in our second grade class speak Spanish only at home. We are a Title I school and our students report they do not get weekly allowances, or use cash in their daily life. They lack critical real-life experience with money and currency. Thus, our students struggle with recognizing and working with U.S. currency and counting money.

We'd like to extend math learning by "employing" every student in a virtual pizza company.

Families are encouraged to participate.

Students and family will keep records (bilingual) of deliveries, expenses, income, and profits onto a shared Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet the next morning.

My Project

In second grade, students learn money, time, bar graphs, fractions, addition, and subtraction. Our students report they do not use cash in their daily lives. Thus, our students struggle with recognizing and working with U.S. currency. Counting money and making change are weak math skills.

We'd like to extend math learning by "employing" every student in a virtual pizza company, both at school and at home.

This program is designed to run this semester in one second grade class, to see if participating students meet or exceed their expected growth in math, as measured by the "Measures of Academic Performance Test" given three times a year. If a majority do, then additional units will increase available take-home kits next school year. For example, some classes might have girls vs boys Pizza Co's.

By engaging students in class with the Pizza Company, and then allowing each child a chance to take home "OSMO Pizza Company," it is hoped that family involvement in this "game" will engage students and families, to further their interest in helping their child's math progress in all areas.

We would run the Pizza Company as a math center during the class day. Each night, a different student would take home the "Osmo Pizza Company iPad kit." Students would run the pizza shop with their family until 8:00 p.m. when the store closes. Students would make pizzas, read customers' expressions, manage store ingredients, deal with real-life fractions, and most important calculate and make change!

Students will keep records of expenses, income, and profits in a shared spreadsheet. Weekly reports would be delivered to the class via bar graphs. The program has tutorials, and adapts the level of difficulty as the game progresses. Because Osmo is a sold as a kit, Numbers, Tangram, and Words program can be used in school.
