My students have chosen to learn remotely this year, as they have enrolled in CPS's online school. They hail from all over the city and are racially very diverse. Some students have severe illnesses that require them to attend classes from home. Though it's only been three weeks into the year, I have really enjoyed interacting with such a diverse group of students. I have Filipino students who like to share their weekend plans to go to Seafood City, Latinx girls who tell us Day of the Dead plans, and Black students who celebrate their political, pop culture and sports heroes.
Since their families have chosen online instruction, most of the students are very eager to participate (unlike last year when everyone had no choice).
Of course, there are a few students who are struggling to break the social shyness. Because these students are 100% online, we spend a a good amount of time on the social and emotional well-being of the individual.
My Project
Hi! I work at Chicago Public Schools' Virtual Academy. Therefore, I work from home in front of my laptop. The Virtual Academy serves students who cannot attend in-person school. Currently I teach as self-contained 5th grade class. I teach English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies
With this project I'm trying to upgrade my workspace to set an example for my students and also to combat the fatigue I encounter in my current home office.
I plan to show my students my workspace to encourage them to do the same with their home office. I believe that an improved workspace will also increase learning for my students.
