My Students

I have been so fortunate to teach curious passionate children for 17 years as a science cluster teacher for grades K-5. When I was hired, I was shown a stairwell where my "teaching materials" were kept and was told I would travel from room to room every period on three different floors (with no elevator)! I taught over 500 students every week for ten years and with perseverance, lots of organization, and a bit of creativity. I tried my best to deliver the science curriculum and content. Now we have been blessed with a new building that houses our pre-K-8th grade students and I have a beautiful science lab where I hope to not only deliver content but experiences as well!

It truly touches me to be a role model and inspiration for these children year after year, watching them grow and become young adults.

Even, when they move onto our middle school, they come back to visit me, help out in my class, take in the new thematic decor, or feed our pets. The best is when they just want to be a part of my lessons and activities and see what's happening in the room!

My Project

My students need to increase their background knowledge and vocabulary in order to independently master nonfiction text by reading TIME For Kids magazine. We do not utilize a science textbook in our elementary school rather. The focus is on creating a hands-on immersive experience rich in tool usage and data collection but there is a need to build nonfiction text fluency.

Reading is not only a crucial way for students to learn science content, it is also an important part of what professional scientists do!

Without research, there is no science; but without communication, research would grind to a halt. Scientists and engineers spend over half of their working time reading, interpreting, and producing text.
