Virtual Learning Experience: Let's Learn Through Play!
Help me give my students magnetic tiles, building blocks, recordable buttons, and a stadium seat to give them a more engaging virtual learning experience!
My students are between the ages of three and five year olds. All the children in my classroom have delays in their development and receive special education services to address those needs. All of my students have a language delay and are non-verbal or use limited amounts of language. Some of my students have a medical diagnosis, in addition to an educational disability.
Our classroom has a highly structured routine that provides opportunities for learning through play and exploration.
My classroom has 9 children and is supported by myself and a paraprofessional, as well as various therapists. My students live in the inner city and many are exposed to more than one language. The structure that my classroom provides helps make learning accessible to my students. They are supported with visual and verbal cues throughout their day.
My Project
Some of my students' learning will be virtual this year. Virtual learning is challenging for them given their limited language and attention skills. These items will help make learning at home more hands on and engaging for them. This will help families make a learning space for their children and provide them with some developmentally appropriate play options.
Students love to build with magnetic tiles in the classroom and the Picasso magnetic tiles will allow them to build at home during virtual sessions with their peers!
The magnetic tiles and foam blocks provide students the opportunity to explore concepts such as magnets and stability. Having these materials at home means that students could be playing with the same materials as their peers in virtual learning sessions, similar to how they would play in the classroom.
The stadium seats will be paired with small lap tables, giving students a space to build on, draw on, or read a book on. The Pipsqueak Skinnies Markers allow children to practice an age appropriate grasp given their size.
The recordable buttons will have a recording that says "my turn/mi turno." Students are familiar with these buttons, as they use them in the classroom to request turns during play. They will now be able to request turns at home during virtual play sessions and with their families. The recordable buttons will also be used to play cooperative games during virtual learning sessions.
