Help me give my students virtual learning care packages, including masks we will decorate to promote health/safety and social-emotional learning, thinking putty to stay focused, and journals for self-reflection.
This will be my first year teaching (I am so excited!), but students at my school are highly diverse, inquisitive and love the arts. Our halls are filled with student artwork and posters that celebrate the wide range of learners in our school community. Though many of our students come from low-income households, they are very loved and come to school each day ready to learn and form positive relationships with their teachers. Our students deeply care for one another and their teachers. In fact, each year, our students lead an anti-bullying assembly and sing a very catchy song called "Bully Not" that is still stuck in my head!
My Project
These materials will be absolutely critical in providing virtual learning care packages for my first class of fourth graders! To promote health and safety and build a sense of community, we will be decorating plain white masks together at the beginning of the school year. At a time when it will be difficult for students to feel connected to their school community, these masks will allow students to literally bring a part of their classroom and learning wherever they go.
We will use face mask decorating as an opportunity to talk about what makes a hero, supporting students' social-emotional learning.
To further support both social-emotional and academic learning, journals will allow students to participate in ongoing reflection and gratitude writing activities that will help them cope with these difficult times.
Thinking putty will help students stay focused during long hours of virtual learning by allowing them to exert nervous energy without distracting themselves or their classmates. Mechanical pencils, highlighters, and pens will provide students with much-needed at-home learning materials, as many come from low-income backgrounds. Lastly, giving students a small bottle of hand sanitizer will be another easy way to reinforce healthy habits. My main goals with this project are to help students feel like they are part of a caring classroom community even if they aren't able to be together in person and to support social-emotional learning and reflection at a very difficult time.
