My students need Android tablets and accessories to travel the world without leaving the classroom.
I am the Library Media Specialist at my school. My school is an elementary school located in an inner city. Over ninety-eight percent of our students receive free lunch. Our school is located in a high poverty area with over eighty percent of the residents living below the poverty line and receiving state services.
Students view our school as a safe haven and look for opportunities to explore challenges.
Due to budget cuts and the increase in transportation cost, field trips are few and far between. Our scholars deserve to be exposed to experiences that will enhance their learning and knowledge.
I want to take my students beyond the classroom/media center walls and into some of the world's most iconic locations for rich and immersive learning experiences with no permission slips required. Imagine exploring coral reefs or the surface of Mars in an afternoon. With the tablets, I can take students on immersive, virtual journeys. These tablets will allow my students to experience classroom learning. They will also be used for a virtual-reality teaching tool. Students can swim with sharks, visit outer space, walk through a museum, and more without leaving the media center. There are close to 500 expeditions available and more in development.
Virtual field trips tailored to every grade level are springing up all over the Internet.
Trips range from the simple, such as a photo tour of a famous museum, to extremely detailed and high-tech field trips that offer video and audio segments to make the visit more interactive. However simple or complex, virtual field trips will take my students to a completely new world -- and the trips are as close as a tablet. While studying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., students can visit the MLK Memorial in Washington, DC and gain more of an appreciation. Teaching my students French? Oui! Let's go to France. The Louvre is world famous for its architecture and the invaluable art it houses in more than 650,000 square feet of space. Why not plant a seed for my students while we tour the Louvre's many corridors? Virtual field trips will instantly connect my students with learning opportunities they may not get to experience otherwise. And it all happens from the comfort of the media center!
