My students attend a family school in an urban setting in which 20% or more of them have family members serving in the military. I teach 13 girls and 12 boys who all receive free lunch. There are many resources that my classroom can use to help create a rich learning environment that fosters a love of learning in my students.
Although my students come from poverty, many of them view school as a safe place to come to learn.
It is a place to escape their life struggles. I would love to give them a safe and nurturing learning environment filled with items which will increase their desire and ability to creatively learn.
My students are a wonderful group of diverse individuals who work hard every day and love learning. Many of them come from single-family homes. Most of their parents work and have a hard time helping with school work. Despite the difficult circumstances of their home life, my students tackle difficult material with enthusiasm and are very grateful for all learning opportunities that stretch their imagination beyond the classroom.
Virtual Reality devices such as the Oculus Rift allow my students to be in a completely new experience that simulates real-life. Some of my students have traveled throughout the United States, but most have not left the east coast! This learning experience will take my students back in time to inspire them and spark curiosity. I am requesting these resources to help my students develop an appreciation for diversity and culture beyond the classroom.
This Virtual Reality system will heighten the learning experience in my classroom, by allowing students to actually feel as if they are traveling back to the Gold Rush or American Revolution.
Everyone has their strengths in reaching mastery or understanding, but presenting the opportunity to see and feel kinesthetically present in a lesson is a powerful learning experience. Using apps on the laptop, I hope to deliver an experience my students will appreciate while learning about historical events. As my students utilize the free VR apps like Orbulus, Trench Experience VR and Cardboard on the laptop, I hope the immersive experience will be visually stimulating and interesting.
