Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students engage in science. Whether they are performing laboratory experiments, designing their own experiments for science projects, participating in hands-on activities or analyzing primary research literature, they are learning skills and having fun with science.
They are socioeconomically and ethnically diverse.
Our students are 64% Hispanic, 32% English learners, and 68% socioeconomically disadvantaged. Our school is making a big push in science education, and our students are responding by taking more upper level, elective science classes. We have added additional periods of AP Biology, Geology, Physics, Honors Chemistry and Anatomy in just the last year. With this exciting new student interest in science, we want to provide engaging and relevant experiences to keep them interested in science. We want to reach as many students as possible and encourage more of them to pursue STEM college majors and careers.
My Project
These tablets will allow students in anatomy to perform virtual dissections of humans in a hands on way using virtual and augmented reality. Modern apps allow students to place a human body on the table in front of them through the lens of the tablet. The touchscreens will allow them to manipulate and dissect through the different systems of the body. There is nothing closer to the real thing that we could offer our students.
Most of these students want to pursue a career in healthcare.
Anatomy can be a stumbling block for that pursuit in college. We hope to give them a leg up, and this technology will help that effort tremendously.
