My students need multiple copies of the books on the Virginia Reader's Choice list to participate in the Virginia Reader's Choice Challenge.

I am a first year librarian at a school that could be described as "inner city." Our student body is diverse with 54% African American, 32% Caucasian, 6% Hispanic, and 7% Multi-racial. Despite the fact that a majority of our students come from households defined as "low income,” our school scores at or above the state average in reading, math, and science.
While we are extremely successful in preparing our students to succeed in standardized testing, developing active readers who read for enjoyment and personal growth is a challenge.
The goal of the library staff here is help every student to see that reading truly is the "window to the world."
Having multiple copies of the books chosen for the 2018 - 2019 Virginia Reader's Choice list will enable readers to interact with books that have been chosen by the Virginia State Reading Association for their readability and interest level to middle school readers.
By participating in the Virginia Reader's Choice Challenge, readers will hopefully find a book that really resonates with them and opens their eyes to the possibilities of reading for enjoyment and personal growth.
The Big Dark is a science fiction book that speculates in the impact of a worldwide blackout.
Ghost is a novel that explores the struggles of a young African American male who views Junior Olympic track as his opportunity to literally "run away" from a troubled past.
Scar Island is a thrilling modern Lord of the Flies where the teenage inmates of a reform school suddenly find themselves in control of the remote island.
These are just a few of the interesting titles that readers will explore as part of the Virginia Reader's Choice Challenge. In the challenge, students will be asked to read as many of the listed titles as they choose and answer a few questions about their reading. Students will be given rewards for each title they complete and students who complete at least 4 of the titles will be invited to a pizza party where the titles will be discussed and votes will be cast to determine which book is the readers' favorite.
