Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a very lucky place to be a music teacher. In addition to having many supportive colleagues, the school is full of incredibly enthusiastic and curious students! Whether we are in music class, instrumental lessons, or rehearsal, my students' desire to learn and make music is demonstrated daily.
I teach general and instrumental music in Newark, NJ, with an extended school day and over 90% of students receiving free or reduced breakfast and lunch.
For many students and their families, learning an instrument at school is the only financial option.
Though each grade will have at most half a year of music classes this year, their eagerness to sing, learn to play musical instruments and write their own songs is very strong. The desire and potential are bubbling over for these future songwriters and performers - they just need the tools to get there.
My Project
Our school is fortunate to violins of various sizes for our students to learn and perform on. While some violins are older and some newer, we have enough for use in General Music and our new Strings Ensemble.
One thing we are lacking are shoulder rests, so students can more comfortably learn proper posture and playing techniques on the violin.
Without a shoulder rest, it is much more challenging for a beginning student to safely and comfortably hold the violin properly, while also trying to learn all the playing techniques needed to begin their musical journey.
With the fulfillment of this project, we will have enough shoulder rests for use both in the classroom, and for our students in the Strings Ensemble. Since no students are taking private lessons in our school at this time, having the proper equipment available at school is extremely important to encourage our budding musicians.
