I am the orchestra director of a college-prep middle school going into our second year of an aspiring orchestra program. I teach violin to 130 underprivileged 5th-7th graders who have made the commitment to go to school for ten hours a day in order to gain the knowledge and skills needed to get to college. My students are vibrant individuals and have made amazing gains in their first year of playing the violin. We are slowly building up our set of instruments one by one, but have run into a storage problem for the violins. This past year, they were kept on tables, but it is hard to keep violins in number order without proper racks. Having a violin rack would allow students to find their assigned number quickly and easily, and teach them to take more responsibility for their instruments. It will also keep the orchestra room organized and give the students more space to rehearse. My students are living proof that music programs change lives and I am so excited to see the progress they will make in the upcoming year.
