This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a safe haven, a place where kids can work toward a common goal. Our students need somewhere safe to be, a place off of the tough, local streets. Kids learn commitment, teamwork, and pride, as well as academic skills.
I am the 7-12 chorus teacher, as well as the assistant marching band director and the K-12 gifted teacher.
Our students are vibrant and love to be the center of attention. All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch, and there are after-school activities that serve extra meals so kids don't go hungry.
However, our budget is non-existent. Our building is old and hasn't been updated much since it was originally built in the early 1900s. Sounds like a great place for modern learners, right?
My Project
My kids are in the marching band. We ask more and more of them every year. They participate in football games, parades, and so many other events. However, they live in an urban environment where they're not well fed outside of school. The director and I spend months before band camp and band season, trying to figure out how we're going to feed these 60 kids. These chips, cookies and other snacks will be used during football game to give the kids a little pick-me-up, to get them through the evening. We expect so much from our kids, we are doing everything that we can to help them.
