My students range in ages from 15-18. They live in a community that spans a wide geographical and topographical range, as well as a financial one. From families who live on generators because there is no electricity available to those who live in million-dollar homes, challenges are never in short supply for providing an education that fits all. It would be very easy for this mix to cause animosity, taunting, or even fights on a daily basis; but, it doesn't.
In fact, I grow more impressed every day with the level of acceptance, collaboration, and positive attitudes that these students have towards one another.
They are so far beyond the tolerance that many groups still struggle to achieve. Add into the mix the fact that there really is no racial majority beyond a statistical one, and you will see that we truly are a rainbow. While the same challenges to teach, learn, and grow exist every day, my students routinely impress me with their willingness to meet these challenges. Though they come from this wide array of backgrounds, struggles, and experiences, my students come together to make our school a wonderful place for learning and growing every day.
My Project
Since my school began using Chromebooks, our ability to create media-enriched lessons has exploded! Students can hear the sounds of Italy when reading Shakespeare's Othello, go back in time when researching poets, and actually see New England when experiencing Miller's The Crucible. For students living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the internet isn't just a utility: it is the only way many of them can experience the larger world. Chromebooks are an affordable and manageable tool that I can use to provide these opportunities for growth to my students when they are in the classroom, and to check-out for use at home.
