I am the middle school counselor in Buffalo, WY, and work with all 6th-8th graders. As the counselor, I get the opportunity to work with many students on peer issues. Middle school is an exciting time of development for students. Peer relationships begin to be a main social focus and so learning to navigate through those peer issues becomes important. This year, we have started a Sources of Strength peer leader group which is made up of a diverse cross-section of our student body. Our mission is to spread hope, help, and strength into every corner of our community. The focus is on building up strengths and supports for students so that if times ever get rough and they are feeling bad, they can lean on those strengths to get through. Developing these strengths allows students to be the best version of themselves.
With this video technology, our peer leaders will be able to capture a variety of powerful stories of strength that are shared by our staff and student body.
These stories can be personal actions, conversations, or activities that capture their art, their style, and their voice. The peer leaders will then turn what they have captured into social media campaigns and videos to share out with our student body and community.
