I work in a middle school that has about 900 students in Atlantic County, Mays Landing, NJ, which is near to Atlantic City, NJ. Our school demographics range from White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian students, in which many of them receive free or reduced lunch. Many families in Atlantic County were recently affected by the shut down of the casinos in the area. Many families have lost their jobs, leaving many of the students to have their best meal of the day while at school.
My goal is to prepare my students for high school, college and life and give them a positive, safe and meaningful learning experience.
Additionally, exposing them to cutting edge technology and concepts will prepare them for 21st century jobs. This project will help me obtain my goal by allowing my students to create their own video game. This experience will expose my students to the 4 c's of education, which are, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills, and also expose them to problem solving skills. These skills are important and necessary, not only in education, but in life.
My Project
Bloxels will allow students to use their creativity to create their very own characters, themes, scenes, environments, and goals in their own video game. It will allow them to apply critical thinking skills and problem solving skills in the game to achieve a goal or purpose. It will also give them the opportunity to share and collaborate with their peers.
Applying these skills are very important in today's society and will be beneficial throughout their lives.
In order to utilize this platform, students will need to download and install the Bloxel Builders collaborative app onto their device. This app will allow players to create, play and share games that demonstrate their personality, and creative inspirations using a mix of tools to create characters, challenges, environments, objectives and more.
With Bloxels, games will become digital storytelling for students which can be utilized in all subject areas at any grade level. For example, students can create a game to replicate the Civil War, or create a game to replicate the effects of global warming, or create a game to show the journey of a character in a novel. The possibilities are endless!
By allowing students to take control of their learning, they will take ownership in their assignments, become student leaders and have a sense of pride in their assignment. This game and technology allows students to be successful and allows them to utilize 21st century skills that will help them be successful lifelong learners.
