The students sign up for my PC Maintenance class to learn new technologies. These students have a passion for discovering how the digital devices they use each day function and operate under the hood. They enjoy exploring new projects different from the normal classroom setting. They learn to code, design 3-D objects, solder wires onto circuit boards, and fly video and racing drones. They learn to troubleshoot problems and become the go-to student to help with any sort of technology fix. They have a new interest in creating and editing videos for our school website and display them at sporting events.
My Project
The students in my class are currently capturing video using a 4K Sony camera. Due to the high quality of this video, the files are large in size. They are attempting to edit these videos on a much older PC and struggling. The PC has older technology that causes the editing software to load slowly, as well as lag severely when searching through video files. The process of making edits and applying effects is painfully slow. The final rendering time can take over an hour, often spilling into the next class period. Students can’t see their final output until the next day.
With this PC and monitor, the students should be able to load their videos quickly and edit them fluidly.
They are excited about the potential of seeing their final renders that same day instead of waiting until the job finishes hours later. They have already created some great content for our website and for sporting events. I am excited to see what they will be capable of with the right tools.
