Video Cameras For Aspiring Film Students

My students need 4 Flip Video Camcorders.

Mr. Meyer Hannibal High School
Hannibal, MO Grades 9-12

Aspiring high school film makers need cameras! I teach Film I and Film II to grades 10 through 12 in a larger rural community that has a 50% high-need population. Many of the students who take film have an interest in going to college to become film makers but do not have the means to make their dreams a reality.

The culminating project in my film classes is for students to make their own five to ten minute long films. The project requires my students to write a script, act in and film a movie scene, edit the film scene, and present it to the class in a film festival. Furthermore, when presenting their film the students must share the insights their project gives them about the film industry and movie-making process. The problem that my classes face is that the school's current technology does not allow them to easily complete all parts of the project. The current video cameras either take VHS tapes or mini tapes. Another issues is that the cameras are incompatible with the school's computers which makes it difficult for the students to use programs like Microsoft Moviemaker to edit and polish their film scenes. In fact, even students who used their personal camcorders for this project are often unable to properly edit their films because they lack and the school lacks the necessary software or materials, such as Firewire, to pull their films off the cameras.

All that is needed to solve the technology issues my students face when trying to complete my film scene project are four Flip video camcorders. These cameras are compact, easy to use, have ample memory for the project, and connect to the computer via USB. Students will be able to easily film and edit their films properly on the school's existing computers without the aid of other expensive products or software. The polished products that students could create with these cameras may be just the thing they need in their portfolios when applying for scholarships and grants for college and/or film school.

Your help will make it possible for my students to fully understand how vast and comprehensive the movie-making process is. What's more, your generosity will ensure that my students' budding interest in college and film careers has a chance to take flight rather than crash due to equipment failure.
