This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am the counselor in a public school of over 700 students in a high-need poverty area. Many of our students have few opportunities outside of school to experience enrichment and success. I work with fifth grade students to produce a news show which is broadcast each morning to the entire school.
The students write the script and are the announcers. Students in all grades are featured for their accomplishments and younger students hold the flag for the daily pledge. The old camera we have been using is not in a condition for students to handle. A new camera would also allow them to learn to work the camera. In this way, they can produce the entire show.
We need a new digital video camera with a stand. We also need extra tapes to save recorded events and news shows.
Your help will give my students the chance to become budding journalists. Not only will they benefit from the experience, but also the entire school will enjoy a better quality daily news show.
