I am proud to call myself a lifelong Brooklynite. I'm even more proud to say that I teach Language Arts and Reading to an AMAZING group of 8th Graders at an urban middle school in beautiful Brooklyn, NY. Sadly, our beautiful part of Brooklyn has been marred by the events of Hurricane Sandy.
Most of our Title I students have limited access to computers and other forms of up-to-date technology at home.
As a result, it falls on the school to try to prepare them for a very high-tech world. Our school is struggling to become more immersed in technology, but budget constraints continue to hamper our efforts, especially after Hurricane Sandy. For this reason, I am sure then that you can imagine my joy at being able to have several iPads funded for my students to use. The excitement as each child gets to use them is truly palpable and has brought me much satisfaction and joy.
My Project
So what's the point of this grant, you may ask? Protection! While my students are EXTREMELY CAREFUL with our iPads, the tablets are fragile and need covers in order to protect them from any mishaps. After extensive research, as well as trial and error by me and my students, we have concluded that the covers by Otterbox will best serve our needs. They also come with a built in stand to make use much easier. We have been lucky enough to have several donated but we need two more so that each group in our class will be able to use their iPad without worrying about damaging it.
These covers are FANTASTIC but EXPENSIVE. There is no way that our school can afford to purchase them after our budget has already been strained with replacing items after Hurricane Sandy impacted so many of our students. I began to lose hope but then I remembered that many people still want to help those impacted by Sandy.
If we, as Americans, want a better future, we need to invest in the future - our young people.
My students cannot be expected to compete globally and make the future brighter for all of us unless they have the tools and technology needed to be the best that they can be. A better tomorrow starts with you.
