Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I provide Bilingual (Spanish-English) Speech-Language Therapy to students in a large urban school district. My students are creative, thoughtful and full of desire to learn! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that allow them to think outside of the box and add to their knowledge of the world around them! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
The majority of my students come from Bilingual Spanish-speaking households and oftentimes don't have the resources or access to much needed supplies to enrich their learning and communication experiences.
My Project
As service providers, we try to find the best way to make the most out of our limited resources! By using our color printer, laminating sheets and velcro we will be able to create vibrant and engaging materials that will be able to be used and reused both in and outside of the therapy room. The population I work with consists of students with varying disabilities, many with communication disorders.
Ultimately our goal is to provide our students with a means of communication in order to access the world around them, BEYOND the walls of the classroom.
The ink will be used in a shared space between myself (the bilingual SLP) and three other related service providers (OT, SLP and PT) in order to create materials to increase our students' ability to communicate and participate in their therapies, in the classroom, and at home. Color ink for our printer, laminating sheets and velcro will help facilitate improved communication between home and school by providing families with low-tech communication and/or visual behavior techniques that are being implemented at school.
