Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an amazing group of eight 6th-8th grade students with moderate/severe disabilities, primarily autism and other developmental disorders, in a functional living skills class. Many of my students have complex behavioral challenges and benefit from a highly structured and routine-oriented classroom with plenty of opportunities to employ their senses while learning.
My students are focusing on gaining the skills necessary for them to thrive in society and to be as autonomous as possible in life.
We are a part of a school that promotes inclusion and the acceptance of all. My students participate in activities in and around their school community such as recycling, going to the local grocery store to practice purchasing and social skills, and attending various school functions. Giving back to our school community and creating relationships with others beyond our classroom is a rewarding experience for all those involved.
My Project
The use of colorful real life pictures is of great value to children with learning and sensory challenges. By having a photo printer available, my students can create an array of visual supports to enhance their development such as photo albums of themselves performing tasks, visual narratives that teach them appropriate skills, and decorate the classroom with photographs of them learning through an enriching educational environment.
By donating to our project, you will help students with special needs create an environment enriched in real life visuals to increase their academic skills, social skills, and increase their overall confidence.
Students will be able to work with and see tangible vibrant depictions of themselves represented in their classroom environment. Plus, having a technologically supplied classroom will increase their digital literacy!
