Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 28 second grade students are from a vibrant, diverse community, and most of the students speak a language other than English at home. In our class, we have students who's families have been anchored in Oakland for generations as well as students from Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and more! My kids and their families are determined to succeed, and together, we are making incredible gains. In the past years, our school has had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district. As it is my third year teaching, I am excited to grow and learn with and from my sweet 7 and 8-year-olds this year. They deserve the best, and this is where you can help.
My Project
Historically at our school, students have learned science with an enrichment teacher outside of their regular classroom. This year, I have the pleasure of getting to teach my students science inside of our classroom! I have done a lot of work this summer preparing engaging science units that integrate the content standards, hands-on science experiments, and English Language Development.
We need colorful chart markers, white-board markers, velcro, and tape in order to make science engaging and exciting!
As I get ready to make charts and prepare materials, I recognize that we need both teacher supplies and student supplies to support learning. My students will get to create science projects and science writing activities using the chart markers, tape, and student staplers. I will get to make charts full of colorful diagrams as we learn about states of matter, types of rock, and plants & insects! Thank you for your generous support of our learning!
