My Students

I teach Pre-K in Albany, NY. This is an inner city, low income school district with many new immigrants to the country including political refugees. Out of my 18 students, many come to school not knowing many of the basic academic skills - colors, shapes, counting, letters.

For most, it is their first year of formal schooling, and the change and growth they experience in one year is amazing.

It is my goal to give them a strong positive foundation for the rest of their education.

My Project

One of the best units of study in our Pre-K program is our animal unit. Students have a chance to learn about habitats and animals they may not have seen before. Within this unit, we always have an ocean week. Our Pre-K team really wants to extend our students learning about oceans this year.

In previous years, aquariums were not an option for a trip but now with one only 30 minutes from our school, it has become possible.

At VIA Aquarium, the students will be able to see firsthand many of the things we have talked about in the classroom. They will also be able to participate in an age-appropriate program that will review and extend all of the concepts that we learned in class.
