Walt Disney once said, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible." Being a theater teacher, I get that opportunity to do that with every single kid that walks through my door.
Do you remember the first time you finally felt like you belonged somewhere...that place where you felt safe and knew that this experience would change your life?
I teach Theater Arts in a Title I school. I have seen lives transformed because of the power of the arts. Kids that deal with adult issues on a daily basis can come to our stage and be set free. It's a place where they can express who they are without any ridicule. They are celebrated and encouraged. Their creativity is set loose and they do the impossible.
I learn more from them than they do from me. Their hearts are pure and longing for something to belong to. When creating a video of what theater means to them, some of the responses I got were: "Theater is my safe-space, my way out, my heart, home, my heart-beat, a place of friendship, expressing yourself, my saving grace, the happiest place on earth."
My Project
This year, our school is developing a program to honor military veterans in our area. The program will be almost entirely student-led. We are hoping to involve the entire community to honor our local veterans and want to ensure we can put on the best show possible. In order to do this, we need supplies to build sets and make sure the stage looks great.
Any donation to help our students honor our local veterans would be much appreciated.
In particular, we need paints for sets and various flags for theater decor to enhance the overall experience. Our students on the decorating/set design committee will use these materials to create theater magic!
