This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dunkirk Intermediate School is a community of amazing kids who have little opportunity because of the circumstances in which they live. Dunkirk is a small urban community that is over 50% Hispanic and falls below the poverty line. Many of our families qualify for food stamps and tend to spend most of that money on processed items because they are inexpensive. The cheaper the product, the more they can stretch these precious stamps in order to feed their children.

To be self sustaining and healthy is a dream of many of our students.

Most of our kiddos do not know where their food comes from nor how it is processed and how many harmful chemicals are put into the foods they eat. However, they all want to have a better, healthier life for themselves. This project will be phase 2 for our 6th grade students to learn about composting and growing.

My Project

5th and 6th grade students will learn how to maximize space in order to grow their own produce. They will learn soil composition, organic gardening practices and the best way to grow a vertical garden. They will learn the basics of composting and use live worms in the production of their gardens. This will be the beginning of a larger project which will include raised bed production.

Students will be able to harvest their own food, process, preserve and prepare it for their families using the most healthy options possible.

Students will also learn to give back to different community organizations with any surplus that they produce.
