While over 90% of my students come from low-income households, my students are hard working, independent, and amazing. I have special education students, students who are learning English as a second language, and students who are in homeless shelters. There is a huge range of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds among my 48 students. I see 24 students in the morning when I teach them reading. I see the other half in the afternoon. Over the school year, we have built a relationship of trust and I have come to cherish this amazing group of 10 year olds. We have been working to build our math skills through engaging learning activities. I want to build mathematicians who feel confident to share their knowledge with the world.
My Project
We all know that learning is more meaningful when it is hands-on and engaging. Math can be a rough topic for struggling students, and having a hands-on component will help engage all. To achieve this goal I am seeking support in purchasing VersaTiles Math Classroom Kit in our classroom. It will be a great addition to our rigorous learning environment. VersaTiles is aligned to our state and national standards and will reinforce my students learning goals in a fun and engaging way. With VersaTiles, students can independently answer questions and get immediate feedback if their answer is correct or not. Research shows that immediate feedback has one of the most powerful positive effects on student learning.
One of our struggles as teachers is to have engaging activities that students can do independently and quietly.
VersaTiles solves this problem. Students will work with various math activities. They then flip over the VersaTiles to see what pattern they created and if it matches the answer key. If it is correct they know immediately, gaining confidence in their understanding and ability. If incorrect, they correct and recheck. This system is great for independent practice, which increases student confidence, and allows students to take ownership of their learning.
