My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence, but come to school every day ready to learn. In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn. The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and hopefully, someday a safer community, as well.
Our students are English language learners in an urban neighborhood.
School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
My Project
I have recently been assigned to a 3rd and 4th-grade split. Due to being a split grade classroom, we spend a lot of time working in small groups and centers. These kits will allow students a fun and kinesthetic method to learn and practice foundational literacy skills. 95% of the students in my classroom are English Language Learners. These VersaTiles will be an amazing tool for our ESL work as well. These kits address vocabulary, comprehension, conventions, phonics, and fluency. One of the most amazing parts of this is that it is an engaging method learning that is completely screen-free!!
