As a teacher working in a high poverty area, my students are constantly faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. They are subjected to many high risk obstacles that can bring many emotions. Despite their many challenges, I am trying to provide my students with a safe and welcoming space. A space where they are free to learn, grow, create, and imagine.
The students all receive free lunch based on the socioeconomics standings of this city.
The school has about 800 students and of those students most come from single parent households, poverty, and/or shelter homes. Such difficulties may prevent them from getting ahead in life and progressing to their full potential. Entering my classroom, I focus on who they are and not their challenges. From the moment they walk in to the moment they leave I want to create a positive room that inspires the students to grow, excell, and imagine.
My Project
My students need printer, headphones, and Apple TV to bring our classroom into the world of technology! The printer will be used on a daily basis for a variety of subjects and purposes. These days the impact of technology in the classroom is huge and I personally believe in student's learning throughout it. Having a printer in our classroom allows for me to print, print outs that can benefit the students learning at the time. It is an extra resource to help their learning.
An Apple TV will allow me to model for my students and to teach wirelessly.
I will be able to move around the classroom while presenting my lesson. Students will be able to present their knowledge through the iPad from anywhere in the classroom. I plan on having my students use the iPad for group work and projects. By having an Apple TV and iPad in my classroom, I will be preparing my students for the world around them.
Having headphones in the class would give them a quieter work space that allows them to focus better. It would be helpful to the students within small group and on their tests. Many students have different needs and by placing headphones over their ears, they are given the opportunity to block out any excess noise and allowed the chance to focus and persevere on the task at hand. During center the students are given colors according to task levels. The headphones will match appropriate centers, which is another benefit within the classroom. I am hoping that by adding such manipulatives into the classroom, my students will grow and benefit greatly.
