Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. Sixty-eight percent are Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian, and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically, and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond. In this age of COVID-19, it is especially important for us to care for all of our students in every way possible.
My Project
I have worked tirelessly to bring materials to my middle school students as well as all the PreK-8 students in our entire school building. Today, my focus is on every student at our school, all 550 of them. I would love to surprise them upon their return to in-person learning with a BOOK VENDING MACHINE!
This vending machine doesn't spit out food, drinks, or candy to fill their bellies, but it spits out books to fill our students' souls!
With tokens given to students who demonstrate success in school, they can choose any book from the vending machine that calls out to them, "Pick me!"
Success comes in so many forms in elementary school - perfect attendance, honor roll, positive social emotional choices, and even small moments of kindness or helpfulness. This vending machine will provide an added celebration for our students as well as a visual reminder that they, too, can be successful and reap the rewards of that success!
