This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school with ninety-nine percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I am teacher of students with autism who are amazing! Each is only three or four years old, but is brilliant in his or her own right. Some are very vocal and receive time in the general education classroom.
One has gone from saying three words at the beginning of last school year to speaking in complete sentences.
Others are learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express their needs. I love the way my students work together in play center. I am proud of the way they have welcomed new students into our class!
My Project
As an autism teacher, I use a method called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to promote positive behavior and teach new skills. ABA is a technique commonly used with individuals with autism and a lot of learning materials are designed around this approach. I use language cards in my classroom to develop student vocabulary and conduct assessments. I have the ABA Language Cards- Early Language set.
I am requesting the set of hands-on manipulatives that corresponds with the language cards in order to assess skills such as matching 3D objects to pictures.
I am also asking for educational games and kits such as the Tactile Letter Match-Up Set that will help my students learn their letters through sight and touch. The other materials will help students identify colors and sight words. For instance, one of my students loves playing with traffic signs. I plan to use the safety signs to help him match like items and identify colors. Matching and identifying colors are skills assessed using the VB-MAPP and other classroom assessments.
