My seventh and eighth graders are artists of word and paint, song and dance. They are clever, full of life, and curiosity. And, because as a community we focus so much of our precious school funding to support these pursuits, it leaves few funds for new novels. Similar to the need for new technology, students need to have new novels (the more current the better) put in front of them regularly to keep their interest. Students from all over our city attend our school. Students from a variety of neighborhoods, families, and backgrounds and this novel will appeal to a variety of readers.
My Project
Variety is the key to keeping a middle schooler interested in reading. My students are savvy readers so they appreciate a well-stocked library and this is no simple task, which is why I selected a project that would fill our classroom library with a number of the latest young adult titles. I have 150 students and they read on average a book every two weeks, and I cannot seem to keep them in books. They want the latest titles they see online and the ones their friends are recommending. They want to read these titles before they become movies, too.
