Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a humble, middle-class neighborhood in Texas. Although our school did not flood, many of our students were affected by the hurricane in August 2017. As the only E-STEM magnet school in our large district, we pride ourselves on our STEM education, often welcoming others to visit our school to watch our students work their magic in the science lab, engineering lab, and habitat. Unfortunately, there is an area of our campus that we as a staff are not so proud to show off.
Our greenhouse, located on the back part of our campus, has been vandalized twice in the past couple of years.
It now sports broken windows, hole-ridden siding, splattered paint, and graffiti. Our greenhouse is supposed to be a space where kids can get their hands dirty, grow things, raise butterflies, and learn. Instead, it is a place that stands abandoned and unused because it appears unsafe.
My Project
Students across all grade levels at my school will benefit from the greenhouse makeover! Our greenhouse was vandalized twice in the recent future resulting in this once useful space turning into an abandoned eyesore for our campus.
The benches will be used to beautify our vandalized space and make it more welcoming for our staff and students.
The students will be able to sit and enjoy our greenhouse when they are outside at recess with these new seating options. I want to take a space that has been avoided and turn it into a place that our students are excited to visit. Hopefully, our parents will be interested in checking out our new and improved space, too!
