I teach at a school where Spanish tends to be a "gatekeeper" to graduation. Most students must take Spanish and this means our classes encompass a wide range of students with different backgrounds, personalities, and interest in learning Spanish.
They are all unique, energetic, and resilient.
I strive each day to show my students how much fun learning Spanish can be. We have an incredibly diverse student population and each of my students' individual experiences bring new perspective to each day in our class.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of comprehensible readers and authentic poetry in Spanish to provide my students with opportunities to read in a real context outside of our curriculum. By building a classroom library, students will have the opportunity to engage in shared class reading, as well as free voluntary reading to explore stories rich in high frequency vocabulary and high-interest stories.
I want my students to build confidence in their language skills, regardless of level, and have the opportunity to have access to a text completely in Spanish.
By receiving these books and building my classroom library, hundreds of students each year will be able to engage in authentic reading. They will expand their vocabulary, use of grammatical structures, and listening skills through independent and group reading and discussion. Having access to books outside the curriculum gives me the opportunity to create a student-centered classroom, where they choose books that interest them!
