Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in our classroom come from working-class families in Minnesota. Many are first or second-generation immigrants to Minnesota and all are learning a new language in our school's Spanish dual immersion program.
Our students are growing as readers both in English and in Spanish!
They relish reading time every afternoon and are constantly seeking out other moments to sneak in a little extra time to read. Sometimes it's during breakfast, sometimes it's on a bench at recess, and sometimes it's in the middle of a math lesson! These third graders are truely avid, passionate readers.
My Project
These books will engage students as read-aloud stories, for partner reading, and during independent reading time. I will also use the books to teach reading comprehension strategies such as finding the main idea and supporting details.
It's easy to picture my students thrilled to read these beautiful brand-new books!
Often it is a challenge to track down appealing books in Spanish that third-grade learners will want to read. This project responds to this particular difficulty. Third graders will read and reread titles such as Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Dolphins over and over again. I can already picture them overjoyed to read these books and share them as a class.
