My students need high interest books in Spanish, including a set of Readers Theater Fables, to get them as excited about reading in Spanish as they are in English.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I already read the 'Clifford El Gran Perro Rojo' book! Three times!", exclaimed little Mia, as frustrated as we all are with the lack of available Spanish books in our Dual Language school. Next door, in English, they have all the Judy Moody's you could ask for so we need your help over here!
Many of my 56 'futbol'-crazy third graders come from Spanish speaking homes, though not all.
We have students from Vietnam, the Middle East, West Africa, and Northern Europe as well, which allows us to explore cultures and build bridges from Bangladesh to El Salvador. It makes for great classroom potlucks as well. Yay for homemade egg rolls!
My kids are just discovering all the opportunities now available to them as "big kids," so they are jumping into our marching band, Girls on the Run, our school soccer team and every other extra-curricular activity that will let them in.
Our school is a dual language program, so the students will become bi-literate in English and Spanish. I am on the Spanish side, so they spend half the time with me and half with our vecinos, the English teachers. They receive reading, writing and science instruction in Spanish every other day.
My Project
When I started a library in rural Paraguay as a Peace Corps volunteer, it was impossible to get books, but, it was impossible to get a Diet Coke as well, so it made sense. Now that I am back state-side, I cannot believe how hard it is to get comparable resources for my students in Spanish. In our dual language program, we are expected to provide equal instruction in both languages, but I am usually unable to even follow the curriculum as planned due to the limited resources.
My students need to be reading at least thirty minutes as day and they really enjoy it until we run out of interesting books. Then, reading is an annoying chore. We desperately need all kinds of books. They especially love non-fiction and familiar titles, like Judy Moody. I have had a very difficult time finding resources anywhere, so if anyone has any good ideas, please let me know!
We need these books so that my students can get excited about reading in Spanish again.
It is February and they have burned through all of my books. They are on an amazing roll, but now they are, justifiably, starting to get frustrated and bored with reading that Clifford book over and over. Give them the chance to keep growing and to start to fall in love with a new cast of characters. Thanks!
