A typical day in our classroom consists of numerous activities that encompass literacy and math. Staff and students have continued to work hard to achieve student success. Children require opportunities to extend their learning, and we assist them in this process.
My students are eager to come to school and communicate with others!
As first graders, their excitement for learning and collaboration is eminent. Our school has provided them with stability for learning as we ensure they are given multiple opportunities to acquire knowledge. Materials and support are essential in progressing students to achieve end of the year goals. Our building has worked hard to provide intervention support for those struggling readers, as well as alternative curriculum that will assist them where they are at and give them the necessary confidence to continue working towards end goals.
My Project
My students need 7 iPods for our listening centers so students can increase their comprehension and fluency of text. As first graders must progress between numerous reading levels in order to achieve proficiency, we incorporate multiple components of literacy to achieve this process. Listening to a text via electronic device will allow students to hear fluent reading. This will also encourage our students to build their basic skills of reading such as directionality of text, one-to-one matching while following the reading, phrasing, attention to punctuation and more. In connection to the basic skills, students will also develop their higher thinking skills of reading, such as comprehension, retelling, inferring, questioning, connections and much more. Students enjoy listening to others read and as a result they acquire more than just a good book! Upon listening to a text with the electronic devices, I will have my students fill out a graphic organizer that questions them about the text to follow through on what they learned.
This project and its donations will assist my students in utilizing current technology to enhance their reading.
As we know we are moving into a technological world where children do not know cassette tapes and CD players, which also created additional issues with batteries and scratching. With this, I want my students to be able to explore the love of reading while utilizing newer technology which should expand their love and connection to literacy.
