Moving to 4th grade, I have a wide range of learning and economic levels. This neighborhood school services a mixture of high-density housing, apartments, rentals and established suburban homes. Two clusters and full-day pre-school classes also enrich our school.
They learn that little choices matter every day.
Service is a high priority in my class. It's exciting when students take advantage of the extra credit assignments offered like making their bed. I love when they make connections through grandparent interviews and 9-11 interviews with an adult of their choice. The smiles on their faces are priceless!
My Project
Moving to 4th grade, I'm eager to teach about its rich state history and the pioneer era! Little House on the Prairie is a must-read classic that not only provides enriching language and reading skills but amazing compare-contrast to the innovations of today's modern world to benefit five classrooms.
ABC...UTAH...what a great place to be!
I have a unit that correlates to this book (but don't have the book) that integrates reading and writing. Then the students each take a letter to further research that topic for a report and art piece to present to the class and display their letter in an ABC format bulletin board. We anticipate our end of year musical program that showcases the wonderful state of Utah!
My student LOVE writing to pen pals at another school. I've done it for 3 years and would like to try a postcard exchange with another western school outside of Utah, where we could share about our community and see how our communities are the same/different. This ties in perfectly with western expansion, the Pony Express, economy, etc. Socially, this sparks so much interest in those peers lives and they look forward to getting the mail a few times through the year.
Organized book files help keep our class neat and tidy with books they don't need at their desks and prolong the life of textbooks for years to come.
