Hard work...works! My 21 4th graders are kind, bright and eager learners. I have a wide range of learning and economic needs and we're in this venture together. They know they can do hard things!
Students learn that little choices matter.
Real-life applications to lessons are key in my class - careers that use multiplication (Math), how often favorite authors were rejected (JK Rowling) yet persevered, the effects of invasive species/change (Science). They empathize with characters in books and Utah history. Each year my students are challenged to make their beds for a week after watching a favorite speech, surprising their parents and themselves with how choosing to make their bed can affect other areas of their lives.
My Project
Utah 4th graders have a new STEM curriculum this year, and while we received some great materials with it, we believe allowing them to watch the process of caterpillars turn into butterflies provides a rare, real-life application of their learning in a safe, hands-free but very visual way.
With the loss of our school computer lab, the ability for students to print their own work teaches them responsibility as they create their own written works in-class and at-home and feelings of accomplishment to have a hard copy to share, display or add to their journal.
With 4 classes and 6 shared computers hooked up to a wireless printer, we believe this to be a very useful tool.
Utah's history and geography is one that excites students and we are always aiming to add to grade-level materials to make this a more enriching experience. Arrow heads, costumes to discuss (and hopefully wear for a performance), and a rainstick for Social Studies and Literature should make for a memorable time.
