Using Winning Electronics Building Blocks to Close the Gaps
My students need to close the educational gap between themselves and their general education peers. Having fun doing it is a big bonus! They need several littleBits such as Little Bits Code Kit, littleBits Gizmos and Gadgets, and littleBits Synth Kit.
I work with 15 amazingly creative special education students. They are very motivated to build with the large Lego selection that is in our classroom. I would like to take this interest to a higher level. They were recently exposed to littleBits in their general education settings. Students of varying needs and disabilities lit up and were actively engaged throughout the presentation. The skills that they learn through these winning electronic building blocks for creating minds that explore, question, and build will help them with future academic requirements as well as boost their desire to be educated. I would like to bring this incredible enthusiasm into our smaller class setting throughout the day and use it as a motivating tool to encourage them to take chances and tackle the parts of the curriculum that is very difficult for them.
My Project
Having several littleBit kits such as Little Bits Code Kit, littleBits Gizmos and Gadgets, and littleBits Synth Kit that focus on different skills will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. One way they will be used is as a STEM center. Students can Google and watch YouTube videos to research how their projects work. Then they can design their own project using the electronic parts in their kits. It can be tied across all academic subjects. They can make their own instruments and create their own music. In science, they will use the scientific method to create and analyze their experiment and recording the results of an experiment. Students could take pictures of their results at different time intervals and record observations to create their own videos to be shared with peers, school staff, and family members. They could collaborate with their peers to create bigger projects based on what they learned from their individual projects. I could download apps for various math practice skills for a math center using their kits. This would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students.
