This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students truly are shining STARS! We have a very diverse campus of students in Grades K-5. As their music teacher, I have the honor of helping them shine on and off the stage. Especially through our most recent challenge as a school family.
Our elementary school was flooded during Hurricane Harvey last year and our students and staff were displaced onto two different campuses (K-2 at one school and 3-5 at another school).
I travelled between the two schools all year to teach them and tried to help create a sense of normalcy through music. I am so proud of their resiliency and how we persevered!
My Project
The ukulele is known worldwide as a peaceful and relaxing instrument to play. The ukulele can teach young students a lot of valuable music skills such as pitch, harmony, and rhythm and is a great beginner string instrument because of its small size and simple four-string body. Even after learning just one chord, my students will feel confident enough to strum along to a ton of songs!
I know that feeling successful at playing a new instrument, like the ukulele, will bring a lot of sunshine back into our Hurricane Harvey affected school and community.
Currently, our school does not have any string instruments, so a class set of ukuleles would be super exciting. Please help me introduce this wonderful and harmonious instrument to my students.
