My students are full of energy and are ready to explore their world. However, my students have a hard time understanding the world around them.
My students are diagnosed on the autism spectrum and are low functioning.
Due to my students' disabilities, they face many obstacles daily, including communicating (three of my students are fully non-verbal and two are very minimally verbal), daily life skills, understanding the world around them, and dealing with why things change.
Our goal in my classroom is to help each child overcome their disabilities to become independent in their daily lives. This year, we will work on life skills and academic skills using teaching methods that are individualized for each child, as well as overcoming their behavior challenges.
My Project
In my classroom we follow a very structured rotation schedule everyday to provide routine and optimal learning experiences for my students. One of the rotations every morning is Intensive Teaching which is when student go over all their mastered targets (based on their assessment and previous learning) and learn new targets in a 1:1 setting. However, to help us go over every target we have the targets on index cards. Every student has their own individual card box with their own cards in it.
We need to replenish our supplies to create these target cards.
The cards are very simple however, very important for my student's learning. I am requesting index cards in the colors that go with each category. We use the labels to type their target on so we know the directive we have to give to each student. The glue sticks will be used to glue the pictures (as needed) on to the other side of the index card. These target cards get used daily beginning when a student enters our verbal behavior program until they graduate our school in fifth grade.
