Using Technology to Build Equity in Math: Make Math Social
Help me give my students an online platform for learning, communicating, and collaborating with their peers in math safely in person and remotely with CueThink.
...LOVE to learn. They especially enjoy tackling difficult problems where they can collaborate with others. Despite our year being cut short and the challenges of remote learning, they remained resilient and eager. During quarantine, E. told her father she still did not like math, but "I miss being in Ms. Chin's room." Another parent wanted assurance that her daughter M., who struggled at times but had been gaining confidence, would be in my class again.
With the uncertainty of the upcoming year, my school is committed to addressing math learning loss due to COVID, especially for my students who had less support and those with disabilities.
We want to reignite our students' love of math, despite the challenges of blended/remote learning and the limitations of in-person instruction due to social distancing.
My Project
Before the quarantine, our Middle School's math classrooms were alive with inquiry and debate. Our kids loved being challenged and had fun doing it.
Students learn math best when they can communicate their thinking and collaborate with peers.
CueThink, whose tagline is "make math social," will help all of our students continue their dynamic collaboration in class and at home, sharing their thinking and commenting on others', while staying safe.
This online program creates a template that guides students to work more independently. They are prompted to UNDERSTAND, PLAN, SOLVE, and REVIEW their answers. They can write, draw, graph, and create number lines and tables to complete their work. They can even record themselves explaining their solution to their peers, who can then post questions and comments. This is all contactless, whether we are together in class or working from home asynchronously.
