Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are one of the largest elementary schools in SCUSD, serving approximately 750 students early kinder to 6th grade. We are 100% Title I where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. In addition, our population of students consists of about 45% English Learners, which makes technology even more crucial to their learning. Your donation will help our students and provide equal opportunity to experience and gain technology skills that they wouldn’t have access to otherwise. Technology has become commonplace with most families, however not in homes of financially disadvantaged families like ours. When students use technology as a tool or support, they are becoming active participants in their learning by generating, obtaining, displaying and manipulating information. In addition, technology allows students to actively think, make choices and use executive skills in authentic tasks. Beyond technology skills, students gain motivation, critical thinking skills and increased self-esteem knowing they can complete complicated tasks using technology. Technology also allows students to use collaboration tools and resources like never before. Technology is an integral part of the 21st century skills students will need for college and career and to become successful members of our society.
My Project
My students would benefit from using Chromebooks to enhance their knowledge in Life Science and other scientific concepts. The 21st Century student must learn to navigate themselves in a technological world that is rooted in Math and Science.
In order to communicate and collaborate with peers, I must expose and teach my students to think critically to the point where their creativity and innovation will help them solve problems; problems which may not even exist just yet.
By using technology in Science, my students will access Federal and State Standards in Science but also in Writing & Speaking, even public speaking. For example, I will use the Chromebooks to show my students images of Plant Cells, Animal Cells, The Human Body, etc. Chromebooks give the students an opportunity to see a virtual version of a real-life living thing. The goal is to teach them the standards, but also to pique their interest in Science and Math so they will possibly pursue careers in Engineering, Science and Math.
