Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer"-Albert Einstein. I am a high school algebra 2 teacher for 9th-12th grade students.I want to provide more hands-on learning to increase student engagement.
I want my students to be able to "touch" and "see" mathematics, which will lead to conceptual understanding.
Most of my students are involved in many school activities outside of the classroom. So, we have to make the 50 minutes in class count! My students come from all walks of life. However, our school is classified as a low socioeconomic status school. Most of my students have difficulty affording all of the materials/tools that are needed for our math class. And a lot of them don't have access to technology outside of school. I believe that to best prepare my students for a world after high school (whether that includes college or the work force) that I need to teach them how to use technology as a tool in their learning.
My Project
In my class, I like to have students share their ideas on how to solve a math problem. The Google Jam Board app allows multiple users, in different locations even, to work on a math problem at the same time and see what others are writing, in real time. However, to be interactive with this technology we need touch screen tablets, such as an iPad. We would also love to have the iPad pencil, so students can write out each step of the problem, and a case to keep the iPad safe. Non-touch screen devices can only "see" what is happening and can not interact with it.
By donating to our project, you will help my students to be more interactive with the math concepts we are working on.
If my students can be actively adding to our class discussions, then you will be helping to increased student focus and ultimately help to increase their academic understanding of the math. I hope to continue to add touch screen devices to our classroom. I hope to eventually have enough touch screen devices that each group will have a touch screen device to share, or even each student will have a touch screen device at his/her desk.
I also believe that my students need to at least be familiar with the technology that is out there. Our current technological world is growing so fast, and for my students to be successful after high school, they need to be prepared for that world. I want to be able to teach them how to use the technology as a tool towards learning, and not to just rely on the technology to do it for them. That is a fine line to walk, but I think my students can get there with your help.
